Our Crib

Some people have asked to see our crib, well here is, with the rather wonderful vintage plaster figures we managed to acquire last year, they or at least the casts they were made from seem to date from the first/second decade of the 20th century. I haven't yet decided when to take it down, after this Sunday or after the Purification/Presentation on the 2nd of February.
What happens elsewhere?

A very nice crib, Father Blake. I think our priest mentioned that our crib will be taken down after this coming Sunday. I thought there might be rules for this. I guess not.

After the Feast Day of the Reyes Magos; the Three Kings.

Great Manger scene.

Feast of Presentation in when our crib here (UK) is packed away..........I wonder have your Kings just arrived or did they get there 'early' on SUNDAY ? I hope the E & W Bishops have an epiphany about this and get the dates properly back in place.

Traditionally after Jan 6th. Surely you'd know that?!

I like the French custom of keeping the Cribs up (and all the public decorations too) until February 2nd. This date would get my vote for the parish.

I've just looked out and see that the snow has arrived once again. This means if it freezes that many of us will probably not be able to attend Mass tomorrow evening so a prolongation of the Crib this year would be most welcome.

Here in Milwaukee at St. Josaphat's Basilica the Crib doesn't come down until Feb. 2nd.

The Basilica is administered by the Conventual Franciscans. Given the history of the Crib and St. Francis, theirs may not be a bad example to follow...

I understand that the one in S.Peter's is up until the Purification : and it used to be true (although whether it still is I'm afraid I don't know know) that the ones in the Royal Residences are as well.

That would seem to give you the choice of the Purification because you're Catholic, or the Purification because you're English ! (Or, I suppose, the Purification because you're an English Catholic !)

The Lord’s descent into the underworld

At Matins/the Office of Readings on Holy Saturday the Church gives us this 'ancient homily', I find it incredibly moving, it is abou...
