The Real Winslow Boy


Tribunus reports on the real Winslow Boy, George Archer-Shee, a naval cadet at Osbourne accused of stealing a five shilling postal order.

Thank you for the post and the pointer. The Rattigan play the Archer-Shee case has long been a favorite of mine since I was 14 and first stumbled across it in a collection of plays I had.

It's so ironic that had he not been tossed out of Osborne, he'd have probably been in the Navy instead of drafted into the army -- and thus his chances were much greater of surviving WWI. So sad.

But it was a landmark case of protecting the rights of the common man to have a defence against charges.

I do hope you've seen the modern movie it was based on. Quite good. They didn't "go there" with the latent anti-Catholicism, but it was a well structured play/movie.
