Prayers for Sri Lanka

Remember in your prayers Fr Angelo Jude, a friend of one of my Tamil parishioners, he went to collect a group of children from the North and was fatally shot in the neck.

Pray for his soul, pray for peace and justice.

The Chaplain at Holy Cross Convent Heathfield is a ~Tamil and he gave me the background to the conflict. He has not time for the Tigers but the Tamils have been persecuted by the Sinhalese in the south since independance. They were forced to adopt Sinhalese in their districts as the official language and deprived of sufficient parliamentary representation. Thus there has grown up racial tension. the Tamils are mainly Hindu from South India and the Sinhalese are mainly Moslem though there are Catholic in both parts.

Fr. Michael Clifton - The Sinhalese are not mainly Muslim but Buddhist.

Catholics of Ceylon would make only 4-6% of the population. One wonders why the Portuguese couldn't effectively evangelise Ceylon as they did Brazil.
