Eheu! Channel 4!

Catholicism holds that the Pope is the sole successor to the "supremacy" of Peter.
St Peter"s journey to Rome led to the spread of Christianity in the West and the foundation of Roman Catholicism, so the Church has always taught.
But a new [Channel 4] documentary will challenge the link as nothing more than a “conspiracy of faith". In it, prominent academics accuse the Vatican of misleading the world over the fate of the man regarded as Jesus Christ"s closest disciple.
In allegations likely to spark controversy, they accuse the Church of fabricating a connection with the apostle to validate giving ultimate power to the papacy.

Oh Fr.

I haven't been able to bear to look at the full report.

When is this execrable piece of nonsense due to be broadcast? I pray it will be between Sept. 12 and 15th when all eyes in search of truth will be turned in the direction of Paris and Lourdes.

Please, please, if it is at all possible, put out a plea for prayer that the Holy Father's imminent visit to France will banish this diabolical vilery from the public consciousness, and win some hearts and minds among the French bishops.

a terribly slanted interview in the Bordeaux France Dimanche today, made me realise more than ever what our dear Holy Father is up against and how much we should pray for him in this battle.

Channel 4, you say? Say no more!

"You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church... and the gates of Hell [and Ch 4] shall not prevail against it."

Oh look its another one of those 'Jesus married St Mary Magdalen/Wasn't crucified but had a body double and ran off to India/Secretly asked Judas to betray him in order to redeem the World/Made doves out of clay, as a child, in order to show off to His friends/Was not the Messiah/Did not establish the Catholic Church/Now runs a chip shop in Ealing programmes. Delete as appropriate or just don't watch the irritating programme!

Why the shock? That is what underlies Protestantism. Nothing new there. If all the programme maker can to is dig up a sixteenth century controversy, it point so a severe lack of imagination.

As Mandy Rice expressed it... 'He/she/they would, wouldn't he/she/they?'

This has found its way into the Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations. For the record, the comment was made in court to the suggestion that William Waldorf, 3rd Viscount Astor, had denied their sexual relationship.

The Commissioning Editor for religious broadcasting at Channel 4 is Aaquil Ahmed, a Muslim. I have long noticed that the only coverage Christianity gets on Channel 4 is in the form of programmes that seeks to undermine the authority of the Church, our traditions and our scripture. Religious programmes concerning Islam (Dispatches does not come into this category) are always propaganda for Islam.
I can't access the Channel 4 webpages at the moment, but the last time I looked the pages about Christianity described Christian teachings under the heading "Belief" in the terms of "Christians believe that..." and Islamic claims came under "History" eg that the Koran was received by Mohammed through an angel. I don't know what we can do about this.

M It would not do any good to lodge a complaint direct to C4, possibly one to the regulatory authorities might be in order.

I looked at the web site, it says, under history, "Muhammed had visions in which the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) taught him to recite the teachings of the one true god, Allah. The words were recorded as the Qur'an, the Muslim holy book."

As you say, that is not history. It needs to be amended to read.

"Muhammed had visions in which, Moslems believe, the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) taught him..."

I do not doubt Mohammed had visions. It is not improbable. Lots of people do. It is a common symptom of many clinical conditions and can also follow the consumption of certain substances. What one makes of other people's visions becomes a matter of belief.

It appears that the documentary was shown in March this year.

I received "M"'s comment by email, and posted it myself. I have also put it up as a new post.

I suggest that the correct response to Channel 4's misuse of 'believe' and 'history' is a letter to Channel 4's General Counsel pointing out that 1. this is offensive and 2. bigoted and 3. probably illegal under the new anti-religious hatred law (can't remember the name) and requesting that the text be corrected unless the General Counsel would like Channel 4 to be interviewed at New Scotland Yard.
