I went on holidays to Norway last year, and I got to see one of the originals in the National Gallery, where Edvard Munch has one room to himself. He actually painted several versions of "The Scream"; the one in the Oslo gallery is behind protective glass.

Looking around the room, I have to say that all, except one, of the paintings are clearly the product of a pessimistic man.

While many people have speculated on the meaning of the painting, my favourite theory is that it represents the reaction of tourists to Norway when they see the prices of everything.
