Keeping Vigil with Vietnam


Rocco Palmo runs a story this morning about Catholics in Hanoi demonstrating against the Government sequestration of Church property, the police have been making false reports and beating demonstrators.

I had the pleasure of meeting the Cardinal Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly Saigon, on his visit to our seminary in Malaysia. Nice and holy guy. He told us about the Church in Vietnam where the Communists are limiting entrants to the seminary and of the limited pyisical space available. The seminarians have to sleep in dorms and even under staircases. Rumours are that some seminarians are smuggled in under the guise of gardeners and other workers.

The Communists are making some progress such as last year's bumper ordinations. But persecution still exists.
